How the Lionesses are creating a space for girls football

The continued success of the Lionesses has prompted a national conversation on the importance of football to women and girls, with the Lionesses themselves having called on the government to provide more opportunities for girls to get into football and physical education.

Today, there are over 100,000 more girls playing football. For example, the Premier League Kicks Cup saw more than 500 girls at the qualifiers and 150 at the Cup itself. Several professional women’s players attended the event, noting the positive impact that engaging at this level had on their own experiences.

Speaking at the event, Mia Lazaro added:

“It’s really important, it brings girls together with their communities, and wanting to put the shirt on for the club that they want to play for. It’s nice that it gives girls the opportunity to play the game that they love. It’s crazy to see how the women’s game is growing, it’s unbelievable really. It’s really nice and it’s the way that the women’s game should be going.”

Whilst serious barriers still exist for girls playing the sport, Ballers Academy offers an affordable programme to help girls develop their skills and excel at the game. Click here to book a free taster session to get on board with our weekly Ballers Academy for your little lionesses!
